The landscape of the girl and gender-expansive youth-serving sector has changed significantly over the last 4 years. Each of us, as individuals and as organizations, is holding a lot as we navigate changes and transitions while continuing to meet the needs of girls, gender-expansive youth, and their communities. We need supportive spaces where we can connect with others  who also understand the importance of centering girls and gender-expansive youth, especially those of color, and where we can build our collective power in order to make the world we and our young people dream of a reality.

Join us on Wednesday, May 29th for our virtual Members Meeting, one of Alliance for Girls*' hallmark events where members of AFG (including service providers, community leaders, parents/caregivers, advocates, and girls and gender-expansive youth) come together to connect, celebrate each other, strategize, and learn from one another.

Featuring Youth Speaker:

Xochtil Larios

Youth Justice Coordinator

Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ)

Xochtil Larios is the Youth Justice Coordinator at Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ), where she cut her teeth in community organizing, youth leadership, and activism as a program participant while incarcerated in juvenile hall. At CURYJ, Xochtil brought her innovative Youth Transformation Curriculum to detained youth and led participatory research, culminating in the 2019 report “Dream Beyond Bars: A Youth Vision for Alameda County’s Juvenile Justice System.”

Xochtil received her Associate in Social Science from Laney College, where she was honored as a Chicana graduate of Restoring Our Communities and Raíces student networks. She is a 2018 recipient of the California Endowment Community Champion Youth Award. She also serves as a Youth Commissioner on the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Commission, ensuring youth voices are heard in policymaking. Xochtil works in the trenches of grassroots mobilizing and relentlessly advocates for youth representation.

At this Members Meeting, we will:

  • Celebrate our individual and collective impact on girls, gender-expansive youth and their communities.
  • Review and provide feedback on AFG’s strategic plan and key projects.
  • Connect with members, share opportunities and updates on your work, and support one another.
  • Meet the AFG team, including our new co-executive directors and staff

Treat yourself to a delicious lunch, on AFG! We’ll be sending $30 digital gift cards to everyone who registers.

This virtual Members Meeting is a starting point for holding conversations as a network on what an imagined community** looks like, where girls and gender-expansive youth, especially those of color, are valued, respected, and safe.

The event will be hosted virtually on Zoom, which includes an auto-captioning service. For questions or accommodation requests, please c
ontact nia@alliance4girls.org. With at least 48 hours prior to the event, we’ll make every effort to provide accommodations.

* “Girls and gender-expansive youth” refers to cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth, and any girl-identified youth.

** "Imagined Communities" is an influential concept drawn from Chandra Mohanty's scholarship. It challenges dominant and oppressive universal truths that often erase or distort marginalized communities. An Imagined Community is one that starts by collectively gathering knowledge and sharing it for the benefit of all. It aligns and brings together coalitions and solidarities among women* of diverse communities and identities, transcending borders and conceptualizing power as fluid and evolving.
