How can we detect financial trauma in our communities and especially among youth? What are the best practices for teaching and learning financial literacy through and anti-racist and gendered lens?
Dealing with our finances is an inescapable fact of life for every individual in today's society. Yet, the importance of personal finance and financial literacy is very rarely discussed openly. The Anti-Racist Financial Literacy Education for Girls*, Gender-Expansive Youth and their Champions workshop series will introduce the importance of financial literacy and shifting finance related gender norms for BIPOC girls and gender expansive youth when envisioning a world of radical safety. Co-Founders of Latinas Talk Dinero, Alejandra and Raylene, will discuss the gender wage gap, financial trauma, tools we can use to have financial conversations within our communities.
Latinas Talk Dinero take a culturally relevant approach to financial literacy that they incorporate in their lived experiences as Latinas, survivors of financial trauma and as first generation college students. Teaching financial literacy education through an anti-racist lens ensures we are creating pathways of money management that are rooted in the needs of low income, BIPOC communities.
This workshop is a virtual three-part series hosted on Zoom.
This is an intergenerational workshop for youth and adults working with youth. All Alliance for Girls Workshops Series are FREE for youth (up to 24 years old).
Our facilitators will be:
Alejandra Magaña Gamero, co-founder of Latinas Talk Dinero
Raylene Hernandez, co-founder of Latinas Talk Dinero
Specifically, we will:
Address the lack of access to personal finance education, particularly in low-income, BIPOC communities
Learn a culturally relevant, anti-racist financial literacy education that shifts away from the traditional, euro-centric understanding of money management to ensure that girls are equipped with decision-making power and financial security.
Delve into the technical aspects of financial literacy education to ensure participants are able to support youth in establishing a strong foundation when it comes to personal finance
